Will G1 Users Miss Out On Android 2.0?

Posted: 11/30/1999

Will early adopters of Google's innovative Android operating system be left out in the cold? There are conflicting reports on whether the HTC G1, the first Android handset sold in the US, will be able to receive an upgrade to Android 2.0. Currently, the G1 can be upgraded to Android 1.5 (aka Cupcake), but Android software engineer David Sparks has stated "There will come a time in the near future when we won't be able to fit the latest release on the G1 internal flash." This comment lit up the internet with talk that the G1 would not be upgradeable to Android 2.0.

To put customers at ease, T-Mobile issued the following statement: "We plan to continue working with Google to introduce future software updates to the T-Mobile G1. Reports to the contrary are inaccurate."

So what does it all mean? Both statements are a bit vague. Mr. Sparks doesn't clearly state that Android 2.0 won't be compatible with the G1. T-Mobile's statement makes reference to making updates available for the G1, but updates don't necessarily mean the availability of Android 2.0.

Only time will tell whether Android 2.0 will make it's way onto the G1... stay tuned!
