Telling it like it is...
Most of the problems people see with their cellular svc, whether it be with Alltel or another carrier, can usually be attributed to equip problems. It's unfortunate that the public is just thrown a piece of equip with 'basic' knowledge of it's use. Phones are miniture computers and like computers, if the phone never gets a chance to reboot, it will have glitches occur like recving vm indicators with no ringing / not processing calls / showing no svc indicators / not sending txt msgs. Also, contacting Tech support and asking if there is any known issues with certain handsets will benefit you. This should be done prior to getting into a new phone, as well. If you ask a sales person, thats like asking an alligator is meat is good.
There is no 'Perfect' cellular svc and there will never be. Your svc will be as good as the signal it sees. This may work on line of sight. If you reside behind a hill or in a gulley, your svc will probably be bad. Also, the building that you use the svc in, can drowned out the signal. CDMA technology is what Alltel/Verizon/Sprint uses and has better proformance in building. But, it's not perfect. There is usually a 15 day trial period. This is a good time to test the phone in the areas that you most frequent. If you see problems from the beginning, don't wait till after the trial period to try to get out of your contract. If you are like me, I don't read the contract, either. However, it does state that you WILL be subject to outages and upgrades that will affect your svc. If you move, that is not reason for termination of your contract. If you have issues with your equip and you do not live close to a store for asst, it's your responsibility to BRING your equip in for warranty repair if applicable. AND don't trust anyone who says that a tower is being put up in your area, soon, if they are trying to keep you from cancellng svc during your trial period. Developing of site locations can take a year or more.
Your svc is also affected by the amount of users on the system. If you picture the cellular svc as a big balloon that hovers over you, and you take a puff of air out of that balloon, no big deal. But, if you have 1000+ users taking a puff out, then that's where you see 'cellular shrinkage'. The balloon gets smaller. And if you are on the fringes of that balloon, you will see dropped calls. Also, performing PRL updates from your 'home' area before you travel will help keep you connected. Just dial *228 send.
Also, the problems in 'rural america' is that the handsets, today, are not as good as the older ones like the StarTac and older Nokia and bag phones. With supply and demand, the public wants pic, txt, video msging / games / screensavers / wallpaper / music / and internet, the performance has deminished for the rural user. Not getting the signal strength like before. FCC has mandated that if you want to activate a phone on an acct, you need to have a e911 compatible phone. These phones transmit GPS location when 911 is dialled. If you have any handsets that don't have this feature, they cannot be reactivated on any accts. So, I've got 4 phones that I can't use. However, you can donate these handsets to the Police Dept that will issue to abused and battery women. The phone doesn't have to be active in order to dial 911. You can usually get a tax write off for you donation.
I hope this will give you a little more education on your cell phone and svc.
I do work for Alltel in Tech Support. If you hate dealing with the automated system when dialling for Tech Support, call this number 877-397-9244.
Good Luck.

ALLTEL SURKS.
Exact same problems as Andrea.
Can be sitting still and phone goes from digital to analog and bars jump up and down , phone will act like it's dialing but won't connect. Then you have to turn it off and back on to get it to work and sometimes even take the battery out and start over. This trick we learned from there customer service.
Both thumbs down to alltel.

The only good thing that alltel has is some what of service..more then most around here like cingular and verizon. Alltell rips you off big time i would not recommend anyone going there that doesnt have to!

Katherine, North Carolina
Awful customer service, very inflexible. My grandmother had to move out of North Carolina to a city with no Alltel store and no local calling plan. Despite this, they are charging her a $150 early disconnect fee because she wants to terminate her now useless service plan. They want nothing except money, either from monthly payments on a phone where there is no service plan or from an unreasonable fee. It's really pitiful to charge people when you can't even continue their service. I will *never* choose Alltel for wireless service and would discourage anyone else from doing so.

Jeff, Monroe, Louisiana
Spotty service in places. Slim selection of phones to choose from. Cheapest rates but I think I am getting what I pay for. They seem last to jump on the bandwagon with new ideas. Stuck with them for now.

Gino Tanana, Tampa
Alltel should take a lesson from Verizon. Alltel does not work anywhere in Tampa. They always told me they have towers and no that my service sucks they are blaming Verizon because they own the towers in Tampa. Since Alltel has zero towers they should be honest with their clients so WE can choice someone that has towers. The word RUDE for Alltel Customer Services and Management is their logo. I called Verizon to ask them which phones they recommend if I use switch with them and they gave me advise and told me THANK YOU FOR CALLING VERIZON. WE APPRECIATE YOUR CONSIDERATION FOR BUSSINESS AND HOPE YOU JOIN US.

Whoever is running Alltel needs some lessons from Verizon. You can smell a good company. Verizon gets my business and Alltel goes to hell. I hope they go out of business soon.

Gino knows better.

The worts CS around, don't ever call them they treat you like a piece of crap!! The worst, and they will lie to you. You are a fool if you sign with them.

brent, sarasota florida
alltels is good, and customer service is friendly. My grandfathers old kyocera 2135 worked better in texas than my v120e and my grandmas 5135. good coverage! great job!
